Here was a status update on Facebook from Jimmy John’s:

There’s a problem here: I read this, and I’m in Columbus, Ohio. And approximately 98% of the people who saw this message were anywhere but Illinois. In essence, roughly 98% of people who read it were disappointed that they couldn’t get dollar subs. Reading the comments on one of these posts reveals that.

Social media when done best is about building meaningful relationships. I’d argue that Jimmy John’s would have done better to not post anything at all.

    Good point, Chris.
    I think this might be the downside of social media technology…unless you have big bucks and lots of people power behind you, it’s difficult to filter recipients.  This is probably where SEO and good, old-fasioned direct mail pieces still reign supreme…
