The opportunity in blogging

Monday, December 27th, 2010

At this point, no one can deny that Facebook and Twitter are huge. And they often can help you reach out to people who share interests in your products and services (but not always). Facebook and Twitter are great for sharing quick links and quick thoughts.

I love this, and I love what this does for blogging.

My first social artifacts

Monday, November 9th, 2009

In my first major attempt to show, not tell, I’ve been working on a screencast series for the ColdFusion on Wheels framework. Once a week, I sit down for a couple hours to record and edit a 5-10 minute screencast demonstrating a feature of the project.

This series has led to quite a few compliments, and people are watching and subscribing to the videos on our site, on YouTube, and on Vimeo.

Read on for more details.

Blank Gravatar Have you ever seen one of these little guys next to your blog comment? Have you ever wondered how you could get your picture to show up like some other commenters seem to have the ability to do?

Well, these little guys are called Gravatars. And I’ll tell you a little about how they work and how you can get one.

Avoid slot machine marketing

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Don’t be like Jimmy John’s and spray out irrelevant marketing messages to everyone within earshot. This isn’t in the "marketing disasters" category by any means, but I would file it under the "someone isn’t thinking" category.

What did they do? Read on and learn.

The practical take on social media

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I often try to remind myself of this quote from Scott Karp’s Publishing 2.0 blog:

Web 2.0 entrepreneurs who read TechCrunch daily (and who power-use multiple sites with “tagging” and who subscribe to 100+ tech RSS feeds) need to occasionally turn off the PC, put on some clothes, and head down to the local Walmart to spend some time hanging out with the mainstream.

As exciting as all of this new technology is, we’ve just broken through the early adopter phase of this new-fangled Interweb.

Using FeedBurner? Why you should use their MyBrand

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I am a fan of FeedBurner. But URLs are permanent.

What happens when you have visitors subscribe to a standard feeds.feedburner.com URL?

  • People subscribe to a URL owned by Google.
  • If you want to discontinue the use of FeedBurner, you’ll lose those people because you don’t own the feedburner.com domain.

Read on to find out how to avoid these problems.

Blogging and being in the right place at the right time

Friday, June 26th, 2009

A couple weeks ago, I stumbled upon a slightly controversial blog post about an industry issue just after it was posted. It generated 108 comments, and I’m sure that thousands of people viewed it. Many people read some of the comments, and mine was there first. My comment also included a link to my blog post in response, which I drafted up as quickly as possible.

Read on for actual results of what this did for the open source project that I manage.

Social artifacts

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

If you’re into marketing at all (which I’m trying to teach you about), you need to be producing all kinds of social artifacts. There are a lot of tools out there that you need to be learning. A lot of them are online.

I will be sharing ideas about the more common social artifacts: video, audio, articles, presentations, blogging, and document sharing.

Enterprise Facebook

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

What if your company’s intranet were more like Facebook? Isn’t the point of an intranet to spread ideas and information? Have you seen anything recently that does a better job of hooking in users than Facebook and Twitter?

Your intranet could show a stream of alerts for key events (55 orders placed before lunch, a critical backup just completed, Richard is going on vacation tomorrow, etc.) as well as communication between team members.

And it could give your team members a chance to express themselves a little personally. Why not take the water cooler aspect of Facebook and focus it on helping your employees build closer relationships?

Enterprise Facebook

It’s interesting thinking of the ways that business information can be displayed and interacted with. This is becoming a new passion of mine. It also makes me realize how uncreative I am compared to the visionaries of companies like Facebook. :)

Tips for social media

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

I know that many of you already read Seth Godin’s blog, and you probably already saw his post about making a living online.

If you haven’t taken the time to download and read 279 Days to Overnight Success yet, I am another person telling you to do it. If you’re doing any kind of social media (blog, Facebook, Twitter, flickr, etc.), then you’ll want to read it.
