Online marketing suite: I have a dream

Friday, August 28th, 2009

I have a dream of a glorious website system. One that will tie all channels together and show marketers a clear picture of what’s happening. A system that has an opinion on what the best practices are. A system that is human compatible, not just web server compatible.

The analysts call it an online marketing suite. And apparently I have quite a bit to say about online marketing suites. Read on for the opine.

Google Wave = Enterprise Facebook?

Google Wave

I find it ironic that I wanted corporate communications to be more like Facebook, and then Google announced Wave a couple weeks later.

Read on for more information about the fuss.

CAPTCHAs with a purpose

Monday, May 18th, 2009

reCAPTCHAAs a user of the Web, you’re probably familiar with CAPTCHAs. They’re the little word puzzle with the squiggly letters that you are required to type in when signing up for various services.

It’s estimated that 60 million CAPTCHAs are solved around the world each day. In light of this, Carnegie Mellon has created a program called reCAPTCHA that actually puts all of this superfluous work to use.

Read on to see what this is all about and how you can help out.

Enterprise Facebook

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

What if your company’s intranet were more like Facebook? Isn’t the point of an intranet to spread ideas and information? Have you seen anything recently that does a better job of hooking in users than Facebook and Twitter?

Your intranet could show a stream of alerts for key events (55 orders placed before lunch, a critical backup just completed, Richard is going on vacation tomorrow, etc.) as well as communication between team members.

And it could give your team members a chance to express themselves a little personally. Why not take the water cooler aspect of Facebook and focus it on helping your employees build closer relationships?

Enterprise Facebook

It’s interesting thinking of the ways that business information can be displayed and interacted with. This is becoming a new passion of mine. It also makes me realize how uncreative I am compared to the visionaries of companies like Facebook. :)

Entrepreneurialship and technology

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

I work for a fairly large company during the day. People there act completely different than the entrepreneurs that I work with at night. Everybody at the day job is afraid, and it often forces them to make bad choices.
This is especially true concerning technology choices. Everything that we use is, at best, sub-par. Our [...]

At some point, you will need to step into the realm of managing a programmer. Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as a programmer may try to persuade you into believing.

"Agile software development" helps manage expectations throughout the process and build the software that you and your customers need. Here’s a brief intro, some pro’s, and some cons.

The new computing

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Don't design for the gearheads. The game has changed. Ben Schneiderman coined this era as “the new computing.” Our expectations of technology are not based on what’s under the hood. They’re now based on what the technology can do for us. Instead of trying to replace us with robots, we’re now using technology to help us do our jobs better.

But with this shift, we have a new set of expectations, and I think the iPhone is a great example of this. We want for our technology to be intuitive, easy to use. We want for it to be beautiful. And we want for it to get out of our way.

What else does your message say?

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I submitted a support ticket on behalf of a client today in their e-commerce system. After filling in the fields and submitting the form, I got this message:

In very alerting red text: \"Your support request has been submitted.\"

At first, I thought I had made a mistake. An exclamation point icon? Bold red text? All of these visual cues tell a completely different story than what the message says.

What do your messages really say in context with visuals? And do you really want for your message to make someone feel undeserved panic, even if it’s just for a couple seconds?

Guide to Internet jargon

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

When doing internet marketing, it can be very easy to start injecting techno-babble into the conversation. If you’ve worked with an internet marketer, you have probably heard a few words or abbreviations whose meanings you didn’t know.
To help alleviate this, I’ve taken my first stab at writing a glossary of common terms involved with internet [...]

If you’ve done any reading up on Internet marketing, you’ve probably run across the term RSS. This video by Common Craft does the best job of explaining RSS, so I’ll just leave it up to them.
Now that you know how to use a feed reader, why don’t you subscribe to my feed?
