Designing by committee

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

This video shows you what you get when you design by committee. While funny and a little absurd, there is a lot of truth that rings from it.

Committees are OK for some things, but not subjective things like the design process.

Take it from experience. In terms of Internet Marketing, the worst thing that you can do is design a website by committee. The fewer the people involved in the process, the better.

Are you being ridiculed?

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

I recently came across a widget for creating filler copy. Its purpose is for designers to have some fake text to use as filler in their designs. (It’s not a designer’s job to write the content, right?)

Here’s what the widget would look like if you installed it on your Mac:

Completely develop principle-centered methodologies with principle-centered catalysts for change.

The joke is that some people really do write this way. Do you? Maybe it’s time to trim out some unnecessary words on your website.

Optimizing your web content

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I’ve been focusing a lot on optimization lately.

If you think about it, there are 2 ways that you can increase business results on your website. You can pay more to throw more traffic and more eyeballs at it. Or you can optimize its content so that visitors are more likely to become customers.

One of the key benefits of web content optimization is that it has long-term results. When you pay for an advertising campaign, that only lasts for so long. Optimization efforts produce results long after you’re done.

Here are a few tips in getting started in optimizing your website.

Guide to Internet jargon

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

When doing internet marketing, it can be very easy to start injecting techno-babble into the conversation. If you’ve worked with an internet marketer, you have probably heard a few words or abbreviations whose meanings you didn’t know.

To help alleviate this, I’ve taken my first stab at writing a glossary of common terms involved with internet stuff.

Guide to Internet Jargon

If you have heard any technie buzzwords and didn’t quite understand them, let me know in the comments so I can add them to the list.

Your web site needs continuous love

Monday, November 19th, 2007

When I tell people that I build web sites, I get 1 common question. A lot of people ask, “Well, what do you do when you’re done building it?”

I know that you’re probably a little more aware than that, but I just want to make sure. Cool?

In most cases, a web site is never “done.” If you plan on building a new one, you should understand what the commitment really is. It is not wise to invest a lot of money on building a web site, let it sit unchanged, and then redo the entire investment in 3 years’ time.

While your web site is up and running, you should test everything. You should continually be trying something new, even if it’s just a change in wording on a headline. Which one drives more sales or more leads from your site? Use the one that works better, and test it against something else. By the next re-design, you’ll have learned a lot about what works instead of acting on a bunch of hunches and guesses.

I know, web sites are soooo high maintenance!
