Unskilled ColdFusion developers can kill your search rankings

Monday, February 27th, 2006

I’ve run across a significant blunder twice in the past couple months when it comes to using <cflocation> for redirects on public web sites. Unless you are explicitly trying to remember the user’s session, pass a value of false for the addtoken attribute. For example:

I saw this article a long time ago and forgot to post a link to it: The Biggest Web Design Mistakes of 2004 A nice summary of bonehead mistakes that people still like to make when designing web sites.

Strategizing an Intranet for the government

Friday, January 20th, 2006

My team recently attended a presentation by Gartner Research called “Enterprise Portals: Their Strategic Future, Market and Value.” This was an exciting time for us because it gave us a few ideas on our own Intranet Portal project, and it helped validate most of the decisions we’ve made about the project.

How to hit high notes with your software

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

It lines up so much with what Seth Godin preaches that I almost 100% suspect that Spolsky has read The Purple Cow and Free Prize Inside. Although this article starts rambling halfway through, it is [...]

Usability vs. Losability

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2005

G. A. Buchholz writes a great article that reminds us that usability is a tactic, not a strategy. While quite a few of us put great user experience at the top of our priority lists, we sometimes forget that it alone will not put food on the table for our organizations.
